526th Bombardment Squadron

Activated in November 1942 as a B-17 Flying Fortress unit, the 526th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) trained in the U.S. before joining the Eighth Air Force in England (May 1943) to conduct strategic bombing in the European Theater. Assigned to the 379th Bombardment Group, it targeted German industries and infrastructure, later supporting ground forces in France, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhine crossing. The squadron flew B-17 transports after VE Day, inactivated in July 1945, and briefly served as a Cold War Strategic Air Command unit in the 1950s/60s.
