418th Night Fighter Squadron
The 418th Night Fighter Squadron (NFS) was a pivotal US Army Air Forces unit in WWII's Pacific Theater, formed in 1943 to combat Japanese night attacks using P-38s, P-70s, and later the P-61 Black Widow, securing the skies over New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa through night interception, convoy escort, and intruder missions before inactivation in 1947. After brief Cold War activations, it was redesignated for training roles, notably training German F-104 pilots at Luke AFB until 1976, and later became the 418th Test & Evaluation Squadron.
